FINAL FANTASY I (U.S. Release)

CORNELIA

After choosing names and classes for your 4 characters, you’ll be outside the town of Cornelia. Enter and speak to the guard at the front gate to automatically arrive in the king’s chamber. The king asks you to rescue his daughter, Sarah, who has been taken captive by a man named Garland. Exit the chamber and use the staircase below to reach the 1st floor. Continue south to leave the castle.

Enter town from either the left or right side. After saving your game at the Inn, visit the armor and weapon shops in the northwest part of town. Outfit your party with whatever you can afford. Save some Gil to purchase black and white magic spells from the shops further north. On the right side of town, you’ll find an item shop and a chapel that will revive any fallen characters for a fee.

When you’re ready to start the mission, leave town and travel northeast until you reach the Temple of Chaos.

TEMPLE OF CHAOS

Move forward to a door. Before entering, head west. The room in the lower corner has a chest containing a LEATHER CAP and the one in the upper corner has 2 chests containing a POTION and TENT. There are two rooms on the eastern side of the temple that you cannot access yet, so return to the center door. Enter to meet Garland.

 BOSS >> GARLAND

Use any magic spells you learned along with regular attacks to dispose of him quickly. After rescuing the princess, your party will automatically be back at the castle. The king asks you to rekindle 4 sacred crystals and offers to build a bridge to aid your journey. When you regain control, speak to the princess to acquire the LUTE then leave the castle.

Conduct any business you have in town then head north over the newly built bridge. After the opening title sequence, continue traveling north past the lake until you reach a mountain cave. Enter.

MAYTOYA’S CAVE

Move forward to a door. Watch a scene upon entering, wherein you’ll learn that Maytoya’s Crystal Eye has been stolen. When the scene ends, open 3 chests on the left to acquire an ANTIDOTE and 2 POTIONS. Leave the cave.

Back outside, head south then veer east past the lake. Stronger enemies appear in this region so pay attention to your parties’ health as you move along. Go slightly south and enter the town by the sea.

PRAVOCA

Explore the shops for new weapons, armor, and spells then head over to the northwest corner where you’ll find 3 Pirates standing in front of a building. Speak to the pirate in the middle to initiate a battle. Although there are 9 of them, they are very easy to defeat, especially if you use a Sleep spell. Upon victory, you’ll acquire a Ship.

Finish up in town then exit to the world map where you’ll see the vessel docked below. Hop on board and sail west. When you reach the Cornelia bridge, head south until you hit dry land. Veer west and dock your ship next to a forest. Walk south and enter the village of Elfheim.

ELFHEIM / ELVEN CASTLE

The village offers both Lv. 4 & 5 magic spells plus all other services. If you’re short on cash, fight Ogres in the surrounding area to amass funds quickly. After shopping and resting, enter the Elven Castle above town. Once inside, enter the chamber in the northwest corner. Speak to the elf near the bed to learn that Astos placed a curse on the slumbering prince.

Leave the castle and travel west. Go in between the mountains then continue west until you reach the sea. Head south along the shore until you arrive at a hole in the ground. Before entering, pitch a Tent or use a Sleeping Bag to save your game progress, as the next area will be tough.

MARSH CAVE

From the B1 entrance, head north. Follow the path to a staircase. Go down to B2. Travel north then veer east to a door. Open the chest inside to acquire a DAGGER then exit the room and head west. Enter the next room you come to and grab 680G from the chest there. Leave and go south to the next room where you’ll find 2 chests containing a BROADSWORD and 620G. After collecting the items, go back up to B1 via the eastern stairs. Backtrack towards the cave entrance and take the southern path to an intersection. Continue south until you reach a door. Enter and take the stairs down to B2.

Once there, exit the stairwell and move southeast, past rooms with empty chests, until you reach the stairs leading down to B3. Descend then go south. The first room you come to has a chest containing STEEL PLATE armor. Equip it if you like then head east past two empty rooms. Enter the next room and get a COTTAGE from the chest inside. West of this room is one with a chest containing a COPPER ARMLET. After equipping it, move south to the next row of rooms.

Head east past the first empty room. In the second one, you’ll find a chest surrounded by statues. Heal your party before attempting to open it as powerful Piscodemons attack as soon as you approach. Use Bolt spells to make easy work of them then grab the CROWN from the chest. After receiving this special item, leave and head further east. Open a chest in the next room to get 385G. The last row of rooms on this floor are locked, so backtrack through the levels and exit Marsh Cave.

Back on the world map, travel north along the western shore until you get to a large building on top. If necessary, return to Elfheim to rest, revive, or restock items before entering the next area.

WESTERN KEEP

Move forward through the dilapidated halls until you reach a door in the northwest corner. Enter and speak to Astos, king of the dark elves.

BOSS >> ASTOS

The battle will be easy if you have the Mythril Sword equipped. If not, physical attacks will cause little damage. Use spells such as Bolt2 or Fire2 against Astos while your white mage continually heals the party.

After defeating Astos, you’ll acquire the CRYSTAL EYE that Maytoya needs. Return to your ship and sail north. Dock at Cornelia and continue north on foot over the bridge to get back to her cave.

MAYTOYA’S CAVE / ELVEN CASTLE

Speak to Maytoya in her chamber to exchange the Crystal Eye for a JOLT TONIC. Sail back to the Elven Castle and give the tonic to the ailing prince. The grateful prince, in turn, gives you the MYSTIC KEY, which allows you to access all of the locked rooms you’ve been passing by. Revisit them now if you want to collect some valuable items.

Start by gathering treasure within the Elven Castle. Go down to the entrance then follow the eastern lawn north to a building in the upper right corner. The key unlocks rooms with 4 chests containing a MYTHRIL HAMMER, 400G, 330G, and BRONZE GLOVES.

To obtain new items from the other areas you’ve visited, read below:

** Cornelia Castle = Enter rooms in the northeastern corner to find 6 chests containing a CROSIER, SABER, MYTHRIL KNIFE, STEEL PLATE, IRON SHIELD, and the key item, NITRO POWDER.

** Temple of Chaos = In the southeast corner room, you’ll find a RUNE BLADE. In the northeast corner room, there are 2 chests containing a GOLD NEEDLE and WEREBANE.

** Marsh Cave = On B3, the southern rooms hold chests with a SILVER ARMLET and MYTHRIL KNIFE.

** Western Keep = On the western side, there’s a room with 3 chests containing a POWER STAFF, FALCHION, and MYTHRIL KNIFE.

After revisiting the locations above, sail northwest from Elfheim until you reach a dock in between two mountain clusters. Disembark and travel southwest past the small lake. Enter the cave within the mountains.

MT. DUERGAR

Go through the northern door to collect 575G and 450G from two chests inside. Exit and head west. Speak to the dwarven blacksmith in the next room to learn that he needs Adamantine. Leave his shop and head southwest to the bottom of the mines.

Speak to the dwarf there. If you obtained the Nitro Powder from Cornelia Castle, he’ll use it to blast a hole in the wall below. The result is a new shipping lane. Before leaving, enter the room further west to grab some fine treasures: a TENT, GRAND HELM, WYRMKILLER, MYTHRIL KNIFE, HELMET, MYTHRIL MAIL, 575G, and a COTTAGE. Leave Mt. Duergar and get back on your boat.

Sail west through the new passageway. Continue west past a small island and dock next to a new town.

MELMOND

Speak to the locals to learn that a vampire has ruined their town. Visit the shops and rest at the Inn for 100G if you wish. When ready, leave Melmond and head south on foot along the edge of the ocean. Cross a thin strip of land to the right then continue south into the mountains. When you reach the cave entrance, use a Tent or Sleeping Bag to rest and save.

TERRA CAVERN

Head north. Follow the path around to a room with a chest containing 1975G then backtrack to the B1 entrance. The western path leads to a hallway where you can gain huge amounts of experience by fighting large enemies that come at you non-stop. Go there if you wish; otherwise head east a short distance then follow the first southern fork down to a room with two chests containing 795G and an ANTIDOTE. Further south you’ll find a room with chests holding 880G and a POTION. After obtaining the items, backtrack and take the second southern fork down to a path heading east. Follow it to a set of stairs. Descend to B2.

On B2, go south. Navigate through the winding paths until you reach the southeast corner. Take the stairs down to B3. Travel east past an intersection and enter the door at the end. Grab a SLEEPING BAG from the chest inside then return to the intersection and head north. At the next crossroad, head east then south. When you can, go east again to reach a room with a chest containing a POTION. Now backtrack north until you can head west. Enter the next door you come to. Open a chest containing 3400G. Exit and continue west until you can go south. Take the eastern fork to a room with a chest containing 1020G then continue heading south. Veer east and enter the room at the end of the path. Heal your party before speaking to the blue bat inside.

BOSS >> VAMPIRE

The boss can cause over 100 damage to a single character, so work fast to dispose of him using fire spells and strong physical attacks. Once defeated, you’ll obtain the STAR RUBY. The door on the eastern end of the room leads to a sealed slab, which you’ll be visiting later. For now, backtrack through the cavern until you’re out on the world map.

Return to Melmond to rest or revive any characters. When ready, travel west from Melmond on foot then veer south into the mountains where you’ll find another cave.

TITAN’S CAVE

Move forward and speak to the large creature blocking the path. After giving him the Star Ruby, he allows you to pass. Follow the southern path down to a room with 4 chests containing a GREAT AXE, 620G, 450G, and a MYTHRIL HELM. After getting the items, go north and take the staircase out to the world map.

Now that you’re on the other side of the mountain, head south to a cave at the base of the continent.

SAGE’S CAVE

Head north and enter the 2nd door you come to. Speak to the man in the upper left corner to obtain the EARTH ROD. Leave the cave and when ready, return to Terra Cavern.

TERRA CAVERN

Go back to the room where you fought the Vampire and take the eastern door over to the sealed slab. Use the Earth Rod to unlock it. Once open, descend to B4. Follow the northern path as far as you can then head west. Enter the room at the end and open 5 chests to acquire a STAFF, 3400G, 1520G, 5450G, and 1455G. Leave the room and go east, south, west then south. At the next crossroad, travel west, north, west, north, west, and finally south. At the end of the southern path, enter the room on the right to find 3 chests with a TENT, MYTHRIL SHIELD, and 1250G. Exit the room and backtrack north, past the crossroad, until you reach the stairs leading to B5.

On B5, follow the northern path until you can veer west. Continue forward and enter the door on the left. Heal your party before approaching the orb in the center of the room.

BOSS >> LICH

Lich can cause significant damage if he uses Bolt2 or Ice2 on your party, plus he may cast Sleep or Slow. Have your white mage continually heal the party while your black mage casts his best spells, such as Fire3. With proper equipment on, you should be able to avoid deaths and beat him fairly easily.

After the battle, you’ll automatically obtain the Earth Crystal. Step on the gold disk behind the altar to warp out of the cavern. Follow the path back to Melmond. Complete any business in town then board your ship and sail south. Veer west and look for a dock on the edge of the peninsula.

Disembark and travel south. Head west into the forest when you can then go around the moon-shaped lake to reach the town above.

CRESCENT LAKE

Check out the town’s shops and rest up at the Inn. Afterwards, follow the grassy path in the northeast corner of town to a group of sages. Talk to them to learn more about the crystals and to receive a CANOE. You will need this to reach Mt. Gulg where the fire fiend resides. When ready, exit town and approach the northern canal to automatically board the canoe.

Paddle west and at the first intersection, go north. Head east when you can then follow the western waterways to the end of the canal. Disembark and cross over to the volcano sitting in the center of the pool.

MT. GULG

Starting at the B1 staircase, head west through the burning lava then go north towards another set of stairs. Descend to B2. Enter the doorway facing north and continue traveling north past all intersections until you get to a chest in the upper right corner. Grab 4150G from it then head west. Navigate through the maze until you reach a chest containing a CLAYMORE. From here, go south until you locate a chest with a MYTHRIL HELM. Continue south to a chest at the bottom. It contains 1520G. Use the door in the western corner to get back to the lava-filled hallway.

Once there, move forward and enter the door heading north. Continue forward then veer left at the fork in order to reach the western half of the maze. Navigate south through this area until you find a cluster of chests in the lower corner. They contain a MYTHRIL HELM, MYTHRIL GLOVES, POTION, TENT, 1975G, ANTIDOTE, 1455G, 1520G, 1760G, MYTHRIL AXE, MYTHRIL SHIELD, and a POTION. After collecting all of the items, backtrack north and grab two more items from chests on the right - 795G and 750G respectively. From here, head south and use the door at the bottom to get back to the lava hall.

Head west across the lava to a staircase leading down to B3. On B3, travel east to the B4 staircase. Descend and run through the lava to the southeast corner where you’ll find stairs leading back up to B3. Use them. Start by going west over the lava. At the end of the path, head south as far as you can then veer east. Turn south at the next opportunity then go west over the lava to find the stairs leading to B4. Use it.

Enter the door next to the B4 staircase to find two chests containing a GOLD NEEDLE and 2750G. Return to the hallway and travel west across the lava until you get to the next door. Open the chest inside to acquire 1760G then follow the northwest lava path to the next door. Get an ANTIDOTE, 7340G, ICE BRAND, FLAME SHIELD, and 880G from the five chests inside then backtrack until you can veer south.

Go down and around the corner, heading east to the next door. Enter and collect 10G and 155G from two chests then continue east across the lava, turning north when you can. Enter the room at the end of this path to acquire 2000G and a COTTAGE from the chests inside. Now backtrack to the previous intersection and go south. Enter the room on the right and take 1250G and a STAFF from the two chests. Continue south over the lava to a set of stairs.

Descend to B5, where you’ll find yourself in the center of a chamber with many paths to choose from. Start by heading west. At the very end, you’ll come to a door. Enter and head south to a chest surrounded by statues. Defeat the Red Dragon that guards it to obtain FLAME MAIL. Afterwards, backtrack to the B5 staircase and take the southwest path down to a door. Heal the party before approaching the crystal inside.

BOSS >> MARILITH

Marilith packs a punch but you should be able to survive all of her attacks if your party is fully healed. Cast Haste and Steel on your warrior to make short work of her, especially if you have the Ice Brand equipped. After defeating Marilith, you’ll obtain the Fire Crystal. Step on the red portal behind the altar to warp to the world map.

Travel via canoe back to Crystal Lake. When ready, go retrieve your ship. Sail north a short distance until you come upon a dock within a circle of water. Park there and walk down to the canals. Using your canoe, paddle west then north. Go west again along the lower canal route until you reach dry land. Head east along the mountain range to a clearing. Go inside the cave to the north.

ICE CAVERN

Beware of the Dark Wizards that inhabit this area as their fire spells can easily kill your party even if everyone is well leveled. Save your game periodically using Memo to avoid having to go through the whole dungeon again.

Start by following the linear path around to a set of stairs and descend to B2. Once there, take either path down to the southwest corner where you’ll find another set of stairs. Go down to a small chamber. Ascend the stairs there to return to B2.

Back on B2, follow the path down to a door. Enter and carefully approach the chest on the left, as there are many holes in the floor. If you successfully reach the chest, you’ll acquire a FLAME BLADE. The chest on the right apparently contains a SHIRT, though I’ve never bothered to open it. Afterwards, drop down any of the holes in the room to get to B3.

Go through the door then head west across the ice. Enter the room at the end of the path to find two chests containing ICE ARMOR and MYTHRIL GLOVES. Now backtrack east to the intersection. Head south over the ice until you get to a fork in the path. Follow the left side down to a room with six chests that contain 9900G, 5000G, 12350G, 180G, 5454G, and 7900G. Exit the room and backtrack to the fork. Follow the eastern path to a staircase and ascend to B1.

Go through the door next to the stairs and open the chest below to receive a POTION. Enter the door on the right and head south to the door on the left. Collect 10000G from a chest inside the small room then exit and follow the southeast path around to the room on the right. Move forward, avoiding a hole near the three chests, to get a SLEEPING BAG, 9000G, and an ICE SHIELD from them. Afterwards, use the hole in the floor to drop down into the room where you found the Flame Blade earlier. Approach the white pyramid near the chests to engage a boss.

BOSS >> EVIL EYE

The boss uses Bolt2 on the party but one or two Fire3 spells or swipes with your Flame Blade will likely kill him before he has a chance to cast it. After defeating the Evil Eye, examine the pyramid to obtain the LEVISTONE. Leave the Ice Cavern.

Back outside, use your canoe to get back to the ship then sail to Crescent Lake. Conduct any business you have in town then get back in the canoe. Paddle west then take the southern canal route down to a strip of land next to the Lykion Desert.

LYKION DESERT

Travel west onto the sand. Once there, use the Levistone to call forth an Airship. Woohoo! Hop on board then press Circle while holding down the Start button to bring up a very useful map of the world. The yellow icons mark places you’ve already visited whereas white icons mark places you have not been to yet.

Scroll the list on the right and you’ll see one name that is unfamiliar – the Citadel of Trials. Select the name to view its location. Before going there, let’s take a quick side trip to another place you have not visited yet, Gaia. To get there, fly over to the northeast peninsula at the very edge of the map. Look for a town nested within the mountains surrounded by a forest. Land your airship on the grass in front.

GAIA – Optional

Speak to the townsfolk to gather information that will be useful a little later on. You should have accumulated enough Gil by now to purchase some nice Lv. 7/8 spells and upgrade your armor while here.

When ready, board your airship and fly southwest towards the Citadel of Trials (consult your map while flying to navigate there). Find a flat spot to land on, which will likely be the strip of light green grass east of the Citadel. After successfully landing the airship, walk across the desert and forests then use your canoe to reach the white structure.

CITADEL OF TRIALS

Move forward and speak to the sage in the center of the pillars. After he disappears, go to the northwest corner and enter the room there. Sit upon the throne to teleport to a new room. Exit and walk over to the glowing pillar below to warp to the room above. Step on the pillar there to warp again, this time to a room with 2 pillars. Use the bottom one to reach the next room.

Use the pillar here to get to another room with 2 pillars. Choose the bottom one again to warp to a hallway. Follow the hallway down to a pillar that takes you to the next hallway. Head east to a room with a chest that contains GAUNTLETS. Upon exiting the room, you’ll see two paths leading south. Head down the path on the left to an area with 2 pillars. Choose the pillar on the left (west) to warp to a room with a staircase. Ascend to the 3rd floor.

Once there, head north and enter the door at the end. Get a HEALING STAFF from the chest then go west to find 3 more chests containing a RUBY ARMLET, ICE BRAND, and STEEL GLOVES. Now head south and grab 1455G, 7340G, and a COTTAGE from the 3 chests in the lower corner. From here, head east. Open the chest at the end to acquire the RAT’S TAIL. Approach the throne in this room to engage a Dragon Zombie. One or two good swipes should take care of him. Afterwards, sit on the throne to warp back to the 1st floor.

Exit the Citadel and return to your airship. Fly back towards the Citadel and land on the small island slightly southwest of here. Enter the hole in the center of the forest.

DRAGON’S CAVE

Go through either door to reach a room with 3 chests containing 2750G, 2000G, and 1455G. Exit and head west along the lower path until you come to another room. Collect 1520G, 2750G, 9500G, and 160G from the four chests inside then return to your airship.

Fly northwest to the next island with a hole in the ground if you want to speak to the little dragon fellow inside; otherwise, land on the next island to the west. Go inside the hole and move in either direction to reach the room at the bottom. The chests inside contain 10G, 500G, and a COTTAGE. Get back on your airship and fly to the island northwest of this one.

Enter the hole and collect a TENT from the room to the north. To the south, you’ll find a room with 2 additional chests containing a GOLD NEEDLE and 575G. Return to your airship and land on the island to the east, the one with 2 holes. Go inside the lower hole. Head south and descend the stairs at the end. Enter the door and go up to meet Bahamut, who will upgrade your characters’ classes. Leave the cave and board your airship.

At this point, you may want to revisit certain towns that offer wizard, ninja, or knight spells now that your characters can learn them. When you’re ready to advance the game, board the airship and fly west to the continent next to the Dragon islands. There, you will find a village nestled within the trees near the shore. Land your airship next to the southern forest and walk there.

ONLAK

Check out what the town has to offer then speak to the girl standing next to the dock on the eastern side of town. It appears she needs some help rescuing mermaids but her barrel-shaped submarine isn’t working yet. Leave Onlak and walk over to the western canal. Get in your canoe and travel north into the waterfall.

WATERFALL CAVERN

Move forward then follow the western path until you can head north. At the first crossroad, go west. Continue west past all other crossroads until you reach the left edge of the maze. Once there, take the southern path down to a door. Loot the chests inside to receive a SPELLBINDER, RIBBON, 13450G, 6400G, 5000G, and a DEFENDER then speak to the man in the room. After he gives you the WARP CUBE, exit the cavern and go back to where your airship is parked.

Head north on foot into the large desert. Keep heading north until you find a spot of sand next to the small forest near the mountains. You’ll eventually stumble upon a traveling caravan.

DESERT CARAVAN

Enter the tent up ahead and buy the only item the merchant sells, a Bottled Faerie. You need this item to progress in the game, so come back later if you cannot afford to purchase it right now. Once you’ve obtained the unique item, open your inventory and examine it. The faerie will escape but don’t worry. It hasn’t flown far. Board your airship and fly east to Gaia.

GAIA / ONLAK

Go up to the chapel, then follow the eastern path through the forest until you reach a pond. You’ll find the faerie standing there. Speak to her to receive some OXYALE. Now fly back to Onlak.

Once there, return to the girl near the eastern dock and give her the Oxyale. Before riding the barrel sub, you may want to save your game in town. When ready, use the barrel to automatically descend to the Sunken Shrine.

SUNKEN SHRINE

From where you land on F3, head north until you reach an intersection surrounded by pillars. Follow the eastern path to a door. Get 2000G from the chest inside then backtrack to the central pillars. Once there, head north to the very top. Veer east and use the stairs on the right to get to F4.

Once there, go south, west, south, and finally east to find a room with a chest containing 20G. Exit and head west. Go north when you can and enter the room on top. Get DIAMOND ARMOR from the chest inside then return to the hallway and go south. Navigate through the paths until you reach the southwest corner where you’ll find a room with a chest. It contains a LIGHT AXE. Head west to another room with a chest containing a MAGE’S STAFF. Now follow the southern path to the left of this room over to the next one with a chest. Collect 12350G from it then continue east to a set of stairs. Ascend to F5.

There are no enemies on this floor so just enter each room to collect treasures or speak to the mermaids inside. The many chests here contain a DIAMOND SHIELD, ANTIDOTE, 5000G, 4150G, 10000G, 10G, 2750G, 1760G, DIAMOND ARMLET, 9000G, DIAMOND HELM, DIAMOND GLOVES, and the ROSETTA STONE (key item). After collecting all of the loot, backtrack to the 3rd floor.

From the F3 stairway, head west. Go south at the first opportunity then head west to a door. Enter and grab 9900G from the chest inside. Leave the room and make your way over to the northwest corner where you’ll find stairs going down to the 2nd floor. Descend then head north along the paths until you get to another flight of stairs.

Go up to a tiny room and ascend the next flight of stairs. Once on F4, go east around the room to a staircase in the southeast corner. Descend and enter the door up ahead. Grab 110G from the chest above and 450G from the chest below then head south to the next staircase.

Back on 2F, travel west then south to reach the room below. Inside, you’ll find 2 chests containing 8135G and 7690G. Exit and head west. Inside the next room you’ll find 3 chests holding 5450G, GIANT’S GLOVES, and 385G. Leave the room and head north until you get to a door on the left. Grab a LIGHT AXE from the chest inside then exit and head west.

Enter the room above the pillars to acquire a RIBBON, 2750G, 7340G, and 9900G from the chests inside. Exit and follow the path on the right side of this room north. Go around to the stairs in the northwest corner. Descend to 1F.

On the 1st floor, head north and enter the door on top. Move west through the room and use the door at the end. Travel west then south. Follow the path down to a door. Enter and move west through the maze until you reach a door that deposits you in the hallway along the perimeter. Once there, head north to the room on top. Heal your party before entering to face the water fiend.

BOSS >> KRAKEN

Kraken can cause 400 damage to a character in one hit if he connects, so keep everyone as healthy as possible. Cast Haste on your knight and use Bolt3 spells to take him down fast. After defeating the boss, you’ll receive the Water Crystal. As usual, step on the circle behind the altar to warp back to Onlak. When ready, board your airship and fly to Melmond.

MELMOND

If you obtained the Rosetta Stone while exploring the Sunken Shrine, speak to the man standing in the graveyard towards the northeast corner of town. Speak to the man a second time to learn the Lufenian language then finish up any business you have in town.

When ready, board your airship and fly west from Melmond until you get to the edge of the map. Go north from there and look for a town nestled in the forest directly below Gaia. Park your airship near the lake to the north and walk down into town.

LUFENIA

Talk to all of the folks in town now that you can speak their language. One of them will give you the BELL required to enter the Tower of Mirage, which lies in the desert to the west. Before leaving Lufenia, follow the grassy path in the northeast corner over to the magic shops where you can purchase Life2 and Flare spells.

Afterwards, return to the airship and fly over the large desert northeast of Lufenia. Park on the small strip of land to the south and walk through the sand to reach the tower.

TOWER OF MIRAGE

Go through the door that is directly north of the entrance. Continue forward until you can veer west into the center of the room, where you’ll find several chests containing 800G, HEALING HELM, 18010G, 3400G, VORPAL SWORD, AEGIS SHIELD, 2750G, and a TENT. After collecting the treasure, navigate over to a door in the southwest corner. Exit to the hallway and take the stairs up to the 2nd floor.

Once there, move counter-clockwise along the edge until you can access the center room. Inside, you’ll find more chests. They contain THOR’S HAMMER, 7900G, 8135G, 13000G, 12350G, 7600G, COTTAGE, SUNBLADE, 10000G, and DRAGON MAIL. Exit the room and make your way up to the northern staircase. Ascend to the 3rd level.

Head south in either direction to reach the room on the bottom. Speak to the robot inside who tells you to use the Warp Cube to get to the Flying Fortress. Step on the circle to warp there now.

FLYING FORTRESS

Exit the warp room and head south across the bridge. Go around the western edge to reach the door at the bottom. Grab a VENOM BLADE fro the chest inside then head back across the northern bridge. Follow the eastern path now to a room with 5 chests containing 180G, PROTECT RING, 5000G, 6720G, and a HEALING HELM. Exit and head west past the warp room. Enter the door on this side to acquire 9900G, 4150G, 7900G and a POTION. Backtrack to the warp room and go north. Step on the glowing tile at the end to transport to level 2.

Head south to the central intersection. In the northwest corner, you’ll find a room with chests containing a COTTAGE and MYTHRIL HELM. The northeast room has a chest with DIAMOND GLOVES. To the west, there’s a room with chests that contain 13000G and 800G, and to the east, a room with chests containing a DIAMOND SHIELD and RIBBON. In the southwest corner, get the ADAMANTITE (key item) from a chest then follow the southern path down to a warp tile. Use it to get to the 3rd level.

Once there, peer into the dome next to the robot on the right to see where the evil force is collecting. Afterwards, head north and enter the room on the left to pick up a POTION, 5450G, 9000G, and a PROTECT RING from the chests inside. Afterwards, backtrack to the warp tile then go east to a room with 6 chests. They contain a GOLD NEEDLE, SHIRT, 6400G, 9500G, 8135G, and a PROTECT CLOAK. Leave and head west. Enter the room at the end to collect a SASUKE, GOLD NEEDLE, 4150G, and 3400G from the chests inside. Use the tile below this room to warp to the 4th level.

Level 4 is a bitch to get through without a map, since it’s basically a 4x4 grid on a sphere. While down here, save to the Memo file periodically in case you run into a War Mech enemy. They can kill your party instantly.

From the starting warp tile, go west, south, west, south (I think) to reach the tile that will take you to level 5. Once there, heal your party and move forward to face Tiamat.

BOSS >> TIAMAT

Tiamat casts Thunderbolt on the party but it’s totally survivable. Hasten your warrior then cast Flare and Holy if you’ve learned them. After the battle, you’ll receive the final Wind Crystal. Step on the upper portal to warp out of the fortress. Return to your airship and fly to Mt. Duergar.

MT. DUERGAR

If you obtained Adamantite from the Flying Fortress, visit the blacksmith in his workshop. He’ll use the item to forge you a powerful sword, the Excalibur. After equipping it, return to your airship.

Now travel around the world to complete any outstanding business (fill up spell slots, buy potions, explore remote areas, etc.). When you’re ready to go to the final dungeon, fly to the Temple of Chaos.

TEMPLE OF CHAOS

Head north and enter the room where you originally fought Garland. Place the 4 Crystals on the black one in the center of the room then examine it to travel back in time. You start in a room with 4 statues. Exit and head south. When you reach the bottom, go east. Use the staircase in the southeast corner to reach the 2nd floor.

Once there, head east and take the stairs up to the 3rd floor. Head south. At the bottom, go east then head north through the center columns to get to a door. Fight the Death Eye inside then grab 45000G and 65000G from the chests in the room. Afterwards, play the Lute in front of the slab to reveal a ladder. Climb down to 2F.

Exit the room and make your way over to the stairs in the northwest corner. Go down to the 1st floor and head west, all the way to the corner. Take the stairs down to the basement. On B1, move clockwise around the perimeter until you reach the southwest corner. Heal before approaching the stairs there, as Lich awaits.

BOSS >> LICH

If Lich happens to cast Flare, watch out; otherwise, just Hasten and hit him until he falls. Afterwards, go down to B2. You need to get to the stairs on the other side of the wall. Start by heading west then go north. Enter the door on top and navigate through the room until you get to the door in the lower right corner. Pass through and head south towards the pillars. Go west but before taking the stairs down, head south to grab a few treasures.

Enter the room on the right at the very bottom and get a PROTECT CLOAK from the chest inside. Continuing south through the room leads to a chest containing 26000G if you need it; otherwise leave the room and enter the door on the left. Inside, you’ll find a chest with a PROTECT RING. Continuing south in this room leads to a hallway. Follow it down and collect a SASUKE from the chest in the room at the end. After getting the items, backtrack north towards the pillars. Heal your party before approaching the stairs.

BOSS >> MARILITH

As usual, cast Haste and Steel on your warrior. She’ll be gone in one or two hits. Go down to B3 and make your way over to the northeast corner of this floor by weaving in and out of various empty rooms. Once again, heal up before approaching the stairs.

BOSS >> KRAKEN

Use the same strategy to defeat this boss. Afterwards, go down to B4 and head south. Veer east when you get to the bottom. Zigzag over to a room in the southeast corner. Inside, you’ll find the best sword in the game, the MASAMUNE. Equip it then backtrack west. At the end of the path, head north then veer east at the stairs to engage Tiamat.

BOSS >> TIAMAT

The Masamume will take care of him quickly. After defeating Tiamat, go over to the northeast corner and take the stairs down to B5. Make your way south through the pillars. When you are ready to face the final boss, enter the room on the right.

FINAL BOSS >> CHAOS

Chaos is an underwhelming boss. Though he can heal himself, you’ll probably finish him off before he has a chance to do so. Watch the closing scene and save your game data after the credits.

FINAL FANTASY II (U.S. Release)

Select names for your 4 characters (defaults are Firion, Maria, Gus, and Leon) then watch an opening scene showing the assault on Fynn. You’ll be thrown into battle against 4 Black Knights that are impossible to beat, so just attack until the fight ends.

ALTAIR

Watch a scene introducing Hilda and Mindu. When it ends, ask Hilda for the password: Wild Rose. After memorizing the phrase, speak to others gathered in the room before exiting if you like. In the next room, grab a POTION from a chest on the left then use the southern door to get into town.

Buy some armor for your characters and rest at the inn. Magic scrolls are probably too expensive to purchase right now, so make a point to come back once you’ve earned more money (gil). In Final Fantasy II, there are no level-ups – instead, each character earns proficiency points based on their actions, as well as the weapon, armor or spells they equip. For this reason, you should commit to the weapon class each character will use throughout the game (mastery). Defaults are swords for Firion, bows for Maria, and axes for Gus. Similarly, Maria is your natural magic user, whereas Firion and Gus mostly rely on muscle.

When ready, leave Altair and travel northwest to the town of Gatrea. Note that you can save your game data at any point while out on the world map.

GATREA

After talking to the locals, shopping, and resting, leave town. Head west across the bridge then go north around the lake until you reach Fynn. Save your game before entering.

FYNN

Do not speak to any of the soldiers in town. They will kick your ass at current HP levels. Prepare for random encounters with Golbins, though, as you move through. The shops are empty at the moment, so head north towards the picket fence. Head east along the fence, hugging the trees until you get to a wall. Follow the wall south and enter the Pub at the end.

Talk to the bartender behind the counter. Mention “Wild Rose” and he’ll tell you about a secret passage leading to an injured soldier. After the bartender moves away, pass through the eastern wall. Follow the secret passage down into a room. Grab POTIONS from 3 chests then speak to the man in bed. Mention “Wild Rose” and the man will introduce himself as Scott, Prince of Kas’ion. Before he dies, Scott gives you a RING that contains the world map. Leave Fynn and press Select + O to bring up the map. Make your back to Altair.

ALTAIR

Enter the Rebel’s Hideout and talk to Hilda in the upper room. Show her the ring you received and she’ll ask you to find some ‘Mythril’. Speak to her again to memorize the word then ask her about it. Afterwards, speak to Mindu. After he joins the party, talk to Hilda again and memorize the word ‘Dreadnought’. Ask her about it then memorize “Airship’. Ask Hilda about the airship to learn that Cid built it. He manages the ferry in a town called Poft.

Speak to the man in blue to learn that you can get to Salamand via the eastern port of Paloom. Folks in the next room offer information also. Go into town and purchase what you need for Mindu, who is a top-notch white magic user. Pilfer his equipment if it better serves another party member.

When ready, exit Altair and head north. Go into the lake and use Mindu’s canoe to get to Paloom in the east.

PALOOM

Buy merchandise in town then speak to the kid near the entrance to pay for a ship. Go outside and board the ship to automatically sail to Poft.

POFT

After shopping, enter the pub on the west side of town. Speak to Cid, who is standing on the right. Mention “Airship” and he’ll tell you to talk to the guy behind him if you want to pay for a ride to Salamand. Salamand is not far from here, so save your money and decline the offer. Leave Poft and travel northwest towards the snowy mountains. Look for Salamand further east.

SALAMAND

Talk to the locals to learn that mythril is being mined in the cave above Semitt Falls. After shopping, enter the house in the northeast corner of town. Ask Josef about “Mythril” and he’ll want you to prove yourself worthy by saving the villagers in the cavern behind Semitt Falls first. Ask Josef about “Wild Rose” as well.

Leave Salamand and head west through the forest until you reach the sea. Follow the shoreline south then use the canoe to travel east along the canal. Enter the cave above the waterfall.

SEMITT FALLS

Starting on B1, head west. Ignore the blue crystal to the north for now. Continue west then veer north to a chest containing 10 GIL. Backtrack a bit then take the southern path all the way down. Veer east to find a chest containing 200 GIL. Head west from here to a set of stairs. Descend to B2.

Use your canoe to get to dry land then head north. Open a chest in the northwest corner containing EYE DROPS. Backtrack to the crossroad and go east. Use your canoe to reach a chest further north. It contains a POTION. Paddle back and go south until you can veer west towards another chest containing a POTION. Now head north over the water until you reach an area with 4 doors. The door on the far left leads to a staircase; the others are empty. Descend to B3.

Head south to a chest with 1 GIL then backtrack to the crossroad and go west. Follow the path north, ignoring the empty room on top. Continue west towards 3 doors. Before exploring them, head south to collect 50 GIL from a chest. Afterwards, enter the door on the far left to find the villagers. Speak to Pavel, who asks that you distract the guards while he helps the others escape. After Pavel leaves, use the stairs in the right corner of this room to get to B4.

On B4, travel west then head north across a bridge to reach a chest containing a FIRE SCROLL. Backtrack to the bridge and go east to a 4-way intersection. Take the northern path all the way around to a staircase. Descend to B5.

Cross the western bridge then head north. Ignore the door you see as it leads to an empty room. Veer east to find a chest containing a WARP SCROLL, but you’ll have to defeat a powerful Spiketoise to earn it (use magic, especially ice spells). Backtrack to the B5 entrance and head north. Enter the door on the left. Heal your party before speaking to the man in front of the chest.

BOSS >> Sergeant

Magic spells are more effective than physical attacks during this fight. Have Mindu cast Shield on as many characters as possible and heal as needed.

After slaying the Sergeant, open the chest to receive MYTHRIL. Use a Warp spell to exit Semitt Falls quickly or backtrack on foot. Once outside, ride your canoe back to Salamand to rest, or just take the boat in Poft back to Altair.

ALTAIR

Go to the Rebel’s Hideout and show Hilda the mythril. Afterwards, visit Tobul in the weapon shop in town. After showing him the mythril, you can purchase mythril items in Altair, Paloom, and Poft.

When ready, make your way back to Poft. Pay Cid 100 gil to take you to Bafsk or go there on foot. If you choose to walk, head north from Poft then veer east at the mountains. Follow the mountains down to Bafsk.

BAFSK

Visit the shops in town if you like; otherwise, head west from the magic shop and talk to the soldier standing in between the buildings. Ask him about the “Dreadnought” to learn that he’s a rebel spy. After he tells you how to get there, continue west to some stairs. Go down into the sewers.

BAFSK CAVE

Head north in your canoe and get a LONGSWORD from the chest at the end. Next, go east. Once on dry land, travel north until you reach an intersection. Follow the southern waterway around to a patch of dry land in the western corner. Go south from here to find a chest containing a LONGBOW. Head east from the chest until you get to a staircase. Ascend to 1F.

On 1F, follow the eastern path to the end then go north. Weave through the corridors until you reach a Knight. Watch a scene with Borghen showing the Dreadnought’s departure. Afterwards, re-enter the cave and head east. Enter the door at the end. Open the chest up ahead to obtain the PASS then step on the tile to the east to warp outside. Travel back to Poft.

POFT

Go to the pub. Ask Cid about the Airship then memorize “Sunfire”. When ready, return to Altair.

ALTAIR

Upon entering town, you’ll see that it has been bombed. Unequip Mindu’s stuff then go to the Hideout and talk to Hilda. After Mindu leaves the party, ask Hilda about the Sunfire. Mention Sunfire to Mindu next to learn about the Egil’s Torch. Follow the eastern hallway to a room in the northeast corner. Speak to the king about Sunfire then memorize “Goddess’s Bell”. Return to Hilda and ask about the Bell to learn that Josef has more information. Leave Altair and travel to Salamand when ready.

SALAMAND

Go to Josef’s house and ask him about the Goddess’s Bell. He tells you you’ll need his Snowcraft, which is hidden inside Semitt Falls. After Josef joins the party, equip him with Mindu’s old stuff if you kept it. He won’t be staying with the party for very long so don’t bother paying for new gear. Either way, leave Salamand and head west, back to Semitt Falls.

SEMITT FALLS

Go over to the blue crystal you passed earlier. Examine the wall in the northeast corner and Josef will open a secret passageway. Head east to get inside the room. Open a chest on the right to obtain the SNOWCRAFT. Exit Semitt Falls.

Paddle the canoe back to dry land then head north to reach the Snowfield. Ride the snowcraft east across the ice until you spot a cave.

SNOW CAVERN

From the B1 entrance, ascend the long staircase on the left then head west. Grab 100 GIL from a chest above then take the southern path down to a crossroad. Head east to a chest containing 150 GIL. From there, go south to a set of stairs. Descend to B2.

Follow the path until you reach water. Use the canoe to get to the other side. The door above leads to an empty room, so just take the stairs down to B3. Paddle the canoe north. Open a chest at the end to acquire NOTUS then row back towards the B3 stairs.

Head south to another patch of water. Follow the northern route to a staircase. Back on B2, move forward to an intersection. The path on the right leads to a chest containing a BATTLE AXE; the path on the left leads to an ANTIDOTE. Head west from this chest and cross the water to find a third chest containing MYTRHIL MACE – but you’ll have to defeat some Grenade enemies in order to earn it. Afterwards, backtrack to the stairs and return to B3. Move south, going over the waterway on the right. Descend the stairs at the end of the channel.

On B4, go north across the water. At the crossroad, continue north to reach a chest in the corner. After nabbing a POTION from it, head east to another chest containing an ICE SCROLL. Now follow the southern waterway all the down to a chest with a POTION then head east across the water to a chest holding a MYTHRIL SPEAR. Go north, past an empty room, and take the stairs down to B5.

Follow the western path over to a chest in the upper right corner. It contains a MYTHRIL SHIELD. The room below is empty, so backtrack to the water and head south. Veer west when you can. At the end of the canal, you’ll find a chest containing an ANCIENT SWORD, but you’ll have to defeat a group of Shadows and Ghouls to earn it. Equip it on whoever is mastering sword skills, as it is far better than anything you have found thus far. Head east from here and enter the door in the lower right corner.

Speak to the Giant Beaver up ahead. Have Gus ask about the Goddess’s Bell to learn that there’s a hole in the wall on the right side of the room. Go through the secret hole then continue heading east. Follow the winding path down to a chest in the southeast corner. It contains SILVER PLATE armor. Equip it if you like then heal the party before approaching the guardian above.

BOSS >> Adamantoise

The boss hits for 100+ damage so heal/revive party members when necessary. Offensively, magic spells have a chance of cursing the boss, so exploit this. If you’re lucky, Josef’s fists will do significant damage before Adamantoise has a chance to seriously injure anyone.

After the battle, examine the Goddess’s Bell in front of you. Once you’ve obtained it, go upstairs and enter the newly created passageway. Back on B1, head north then go east. Remove all of Josef’s equipment before speaking to Borghen at the top of the stairs.

BOSS >> Borghen

Use physical attacks to bring him down quickly. Watch the sad scene that follows then exit the Snow Cavern. Return to Salamand if you need to rest or revive fallen comrades; otherwise, travel to Poft and ask Cid to fly you to Kas’ion (costs 400g).

CASTLE KAS’ION

Enter the castle and head north to the Sunfire Torch. Use the Goddess’s Bell on the gate above to unlock it. Go inside to 2F and speak to Gordon, who is standing at the top of the stairs. After he joins the party, check Gordon’s equipment to see if it can be upgraded. When ready, head east and take the stairs back to 1F.

Once there, go south to find a chest containing a CURE SCROLL. Backtrack north then follow the western path to the end. Ignore the door there, as it leads to an empty room. Instead, head south to a staircase. Ascend to 2F.

Take the southern path down to an intersection. Go east then head north. Open the chest on top containing 300 GIL. From there, head west, following the path around to a staircase. Take it up to 3F. Follow the path around a corner, going east when you can. Head south in between the first two buildings. Look for a chest in the southwest corner. It contains a GOLD SHIELD, but you’ll have to defeat some Wererats to earn it.

After equipping the new shield, backtrack north then move east until you can travel south again. Follow the path over to a staircase. Ascend to 4F. Head west past the first southern offshoot. Take the second offshoot down to a door. Enter and collect a WEREBANE, MYTHRIL AXE, and MYTHRIL SWORD from the three chests inside. Exit the room and head further south. Veer east, past an empty room, following the southern route around to a staircase. Go up to 5F.

On 5F, follow the northeastern path. Head south when you can to find a chest containing GOLDEN MAIL. Defeat four Mines to earn it. Afterwards, travel east, veering north when you can. Enter the door on top to find 3 chests containing an ANTIDOTE, MALLET, and EYE DROPS. Leave the room and head back to the chest where you found the Golden Mail. Once there, go south then veer west to reach another staircase. Go back down to 4F and enter the door.

BOSS >> Shrieker

The party will be blind at the start of battle, making physical attacks pointless until you rid the status ailment. Use Esuna or Eye Drops to cure darkness then cast Shell to reduce damage received from Shrieker’s magical attacks. All elemental spells replenish the boss and he’ll use them consistently against the party as well, so watch out. After causing enough physical damage, Shrieker will become cursed, affording you the opportunity to finish him off.

After defeating the boss, open the chest to receive EGIL’S TORCH. Make your way back to the Sunfire on 1F, either by warping and re-entering the castle or going on foot. Once there, use Egil’s Torch to capture the Sunfire. Exit the castle and head south to trigger a scene showing Cid’s airship being captured by the Dreadnought. In order to get back to Altair, you can either head north on foot or go directly south to fetch yourself a chocobo! If you choose to find the chocobo, look for a clearing near the edge of the mountains.

CHOCOBO FOREST – Optional

Head northeast and catch the little yellow guy running around. Doing so deposits you back on the world map. Hop on the chocobo and ride north past Castle Kas’ion, veering east towards the gap in the mountains. Continue north then move west past Bafsk. You should know your way back to Altair from here.

ALTAIR

Enter the Hideout and go to Hilda’s room to find out that she’s missing. Speak to the other folks in the room to learn that the Dreadnought was spotted north of Fynn. Afterwards, go to the king’s chamber and talk to Mindu. Ask him about the Dreadnought to gather more information.

Conduct any business you have in town then exit Altair. Travel north towards Fynn. Once there, head northwest to the tip of the peninsula where you will find the Dreadnought.

DREADNOUGHT

Move forward and show the guard your Pass to gain admittance. Do not speak to any of the guards while here unless you can survive a tough fight. However, if you choose to engage any, you’ll find that they drop good stuff. Either way, head east to a set of stairs. Descend to 2F.

Follow the path to a locked door guarding a chest. Backtrack to the stairs then head east through a secret wall to reach the chest. Defeat Warlocks to obtain the CRESCENT sword inside then go back up to 1F. Once there, take the northern staircase up to a crossroad. Head west to find a chest containing 400 GIL then go east past several empty rooms. After rounding the corner, continue east to a staircase. Take the northern path over to a green door. Enter and descend to 2F.

Move forward to another crossroad. Use the western path to get to the southwest corner where you’ll find a chest containing a SHADE BOW. Equip it on someone if you like (Maria, for example) then backtrack to the crossroad. Take the southern path over to another chest holding THIEF’S GLOVES. After obtaining them, head east to a cell door. Force it open to find Cid and Hilda inside.

Speak to Cid to learn what you must do while they make their escape to the airship. After they leave, backtrack to the first crossroad and go east until you reach 2 chests that contain POTIONS. Return to the 1st floor via the stairs. Once there, make your way over to the southwest corner. Take the stairs down and head east. Go up to 3F. Follow the path all the way around to a door. Enter and take the stairs up to 4F.

On 4F, head south then veer east, past the central staircase. Go up to the corner where you’ll find 4 chests. They contain an ICE SHIELD (fight a Hill Gigas to earn it), TITAN’S HELM, MAIN GAUCHE, and TRIDENT. After collecting the loot, backtrack to the central staircase. Go up and use the stairs in the next room to get to 3F. Enter the door on the left and ascend to 5F.

Since guards block certain paths on the 5th floor, navigate through the maze as follows: North > West > South > East > South > East. When you reach the guard at the end of the eastern path, head north. Examine the Dreadnought’s engine up ahead then use the Sunfire on it. Watch the scene that follows. When it ends, you’ll be back in Altair, courtesy of Cid’s airship.

ALTAIR

Remove all of Gordon’s equipment and items, as he’ll be leaving the party shortly. When ready, enter the Hideout and visit the king in his room. Watch an unfortunate scene inside then go to Hilda’s room. Speak to Gordon and memorize “Dragoons”. Ask about them then memorize “Wind Drake”. Gordon tells you to look for a boat in Paloom that will take you to Deist. A man in the room will offer directions. When ready, travel to Paloom.

PALOOM

At the entrance, you’ll see a new girl (Leila) standing on the dock. Talk to her and she’ll offer to take you to Deist for free, which seems rather suspicious to Maria. After conducting any business you have in town, exit Paloom and board the ship docked to the east.

PIRATE SHIP

Shortly after setting sail, pirates surround the party and pick a fight. Use regular attacks to make short work of them. After defeating her crew, Leila joins the party and gives you command of her ship. Check Leila’s equipment to see if you need to modify anything (swapping out her Gold Hairpin, for example). Note that Leila’s primary weapon is a dagger and that she’s left-handed.

Open your map. Before sailing to Deist, you might want to explore an optional island, which is south of your current location. If so, look for an opening in between the continents to the east. Follow the channel across and down to the pink dot marked on your map.

TROPICAL ISLAND – Optional

Upon entering the cave, head south. At the bottom, open a chest containing EYE DROPS then head west to find a second chest containing ETHER. Backtrack east then follow the far right path north until you can travel east again. Look for 2 chests to the north, each containing HI-POTIONS. Next, navigate to the southwest corner. Open the chest there to receive a SILK WEB then head north, following the path around to some stairs. Go down to B2.

Look for a chest in the northwest corner. After getting a SLUMBER STALK from it, you’ll notice a staircase directly below. Ignore it for the moment and head east. In the northeast corner, there’s a chest containing a POISON SCROLL and in the southeast corner, one with a BLIND SCROLL. Backtrack north then veer west to reach a chest holding another POISON SCROLL. Continue west then veer south to reach a chest containing another BLIND SCROLL. Go north from here and take the stairs down to the next floor.

On B3, start by going south to find a chest containing GARLIC. Backtrack north, past the B3 stairs, then veer west. Descend to B4. Head south and take the stairs at the bottom back up to B3. Move forward to a chest containing a PHOENIX DOWN. Fight off a cluster of undead enemies to earn it. Afterwards, return to B4 via the southern stairs.

Head east and use the stairs in the southeast corner to get back to B3. Once there, go north to another staircase. Take it up to B4. From here, travel south and use the stairs at the end to get to B5. Follow the western path to 3 chests. Grab SLUMBER STALKS from two of the chests then defeat some Toads and Horns to acquire the GAIA DRUM contained in the third. Afterwards, backtrack east to the staircases. Use both to get back to B4.

Once there, travel northwest, past the central intersection, to the northwestern corner where you will find another set of stairs. Go up to a chest containing THANATOS then return to the previous floor. Backtrack to the intersection and follow the northern route now. Open a chest containing 1,000 GIL then use the stairs on the right to get to B5.

Grab a SLEEP SCROLL from the chest below the stairs then head southwest across the murky water to a room. Heal your party before entering.

BOSS >> Gigan Rhino

Cast Shield and Blink to raise the party’s evasion then zap the boss with Bolt spells. If lucky, weapons may also blind the Rhino or put him to sleep, making your job a lot easier. After beating the boss, open the chest it was guarding to obtain the BLACK MASK. Look for a warp tile further north. Use it to get back outside and return to your ship.

When you are ready to move on with the main storyline, sail south from Tropical Island until you reach the snowy mountains. Head east along the ridge then sail southeast to the island directly across from Bafsk. Dock your ship on the southern tip then walk up to Castle Deist, which is nestled within the mountains near a lake. Save your game before entering.

CASTLE DEIST

Move forward and attempt to talk to the kid up ahead. When he runs away, chase him north up the stairs to 2F. Open a chest to the west to receive a COTTAGE then go south down the first hallway. At the bottom, talk to the boy standing in front of a door. Ask about the Wind Drake and he’ll tell you the creature is inside the room, dying. Talk to the boy’s mother to learn that you’ll need a special pendant in order to talk to the Wind Drake. It seems the pendant was lost in a cavern north of here.

Visit the ailing creature in the room behind them if you like; otherwise, head east past the second room, which is empty. Veer south and follow the path over to a staircase. Go up and grab a PHOENIX DOWN from the chest above then return to 2F. Once there, head over to the northeast corner and take the stairs up to 1F.

Go west and enter the room at the end. Inside, you’ll find 8 chests containing a GOLD NEEDLE, SAGE’S WISDOM, SAINT’S SPIRIT, WING BLADE, MALLET, CROSS, ANTIDOTE, and EYE DROPS. After gathering the loot, backtrack to the stairs. Take the southern route down to two doors. Enter the room on the left to acquire a CURSE SCROLL, STUN SCROLL, and STOP SCROLL. Exit the room and head further west to reach a chest containing a UNICORN HORN. Leave the castle afterwards.

Back outside, follow the path above the castle north to the Deist Cavern.

DEIST CAVERN

Head east to get 30 GIL from a chest then follow the path above the chest further east. Descend the stairs at the end. Once on B2, examine the Dragoon Corpse to acquire the PENDANT. Before continuing here, go back to Castle Deist and talk to the Wind Drake. Mention ‘Wind Drake’ to receive the DRAGON EGG. Return to Deist Cavern afterwards.

Once inside, head south. Use the stairs in the southwest corner to get to B2. Follow the path to a chest containing a POTION then take the stairs on the right down to B3. Continue forward to another set of stairs. Go down to B4 and head west until you reach a large clearing. Take the upper path (northwest) to yet another staircase. Descend to B5.

On B5, follow the path until you reach an area with 4 chests. They contain KNIGHT’S ARMOR (fight 2 Adamantoise enemies to earn it), a SAINT’S SPIRIT, SAGE’S WISDOM, and FLAME BOW. After equipping the items, backtrack through all of the levels until you are on B1 again (use a Warp spell if you can). Before continuing, you may want to step outside to save your game and/or use a Cottage to replenish the party’s HP/MP.

When ready, re-enter the cavern and make your way over to the southeast corner stairs. Descend to B2. Follow the path up and around to an intersection. Head northwest to find a chest containing MYTHRIL MAIL then go south to a chest containing a MYTHRIL HELM. After collecting the items, head west through the center of the room until you can veer south. Look for a chest containing a MAGE’S STAFF. Defeat some Screamers to earn it. Backtrack to the eastern path then head south to a staircase. Go down to B3.

Ignore the bridge on the left for now. Instead, head north. At the fork in the road, take the northwestern route up to a chest holding MYTHRIL GLOVES then follow the upper path around to a chest with MYTHRIL MIRROR. Backtrack to the staircase next to the rickety bridge. Go back down to B2.

Once there, head north until you can travel northwest. Follow the leftmost path down to another staircase. Descend to B3, where you’ll find yourself on the other side of the bridge. Open a chest on the right to acquire a MYTHRIL SHIELD then move north along the left edge of the broken bridge. Cross the short bridge up ahead then head east until you get to the stairs at the end. Descend to B4.

Move forward until you reach a clearing. Grab an ACID BOTTLE from the chest further west then use the stairs to the south to get to B5. Continue forward to an area with 4 doors. Heal the party before entering the second door from the right.

BOSS >> Chimera x 2

With proper equipment, you should easily sustain the duo’s magic attacks. Just hit each until they fall. Afterwards, go over to Sacred Spring and use the Dragon Egg. After doing this, exit the cavern either by warping or walking out on foot.

Return to your ship and sail back to Altair. The fastest route seems to be north. Just use the seaway next to the Kas’ion continent to get there. Consult your map if you become disoriented.

ALTAIR

Rest up in town before entering the Hideout. Once there, talk to Gordon, who asks that you visit Hilda in her room. Enter the bedroom in the southeast corner and talk to Hilda to trigger a scene.

BOSS >> Lamia Queen

In addition to putting characters to sleep, the boss will cast Entice on Firion, causing him to strike allies and possibly kill them. The Queen casts Blink on herself, raising evasion. Increase your own party’s evasion and hit her with spells while waiting for the effect to wear off. Use any scrolls you may have equipped (Gaia’s Drum works best) and heal/revive those who need it.

After the battle, watch a scene explaining where the real Hilda is. Gordon replaces Leila in your party, so outfit him with the best stuff you can. When rested and ready, leave Altair and board your ship. The Palamecia Coliseum is located on the eastern continent at the southern edge of the large desert below Kas’ion. To reach it, sail east then go south through the gap. If you decide to dock near the southeastern desert and walk to the Coliseum, you’ll face tough enemies along the way. Alternately, dock the ship at Kas’ion and find a chocobo that you can ride there. Either way, save your game outside before entering.

COLISEUM

As you head north towards the stairs, a gate will rise, denying access to the emperor. Instead, you’ll be pitted against a Behemoth that enters the ring.

BOSS >> Behemoth

The boss is rather slow and does not cause too much damage so just hack away at it until Behemoth perishes. After the battle, the party is taken to a cell on B2. When you regain control, examine the cell door to trigger a scene with Pavel. After he releases the party, head east. Go north over the water to reach the chest on top. It contains an ANTIDOTE, but you’ll have to defeat Deadringers & Co. to earn the item.

Backtrack to the empty cell then head north. Veer east when you can. Ignore the first room and enter the one further east to find 3 chests containing an ELIXIR, ETHER, and COTTAGE. Exit the room and head north. Enter the room in the northeast corner to find a staircase. Go up to B1.

Once there, follow the path around to the cell where Hilda is being held captive. Examine the door to initiate a scene in which Gordon leaves with her. Now, with one less party member, leave the cell and backtrack to the lower hallway. Head west to a set of stairs. Ascend to 1F and follow the path around to the coliseum’s exit.

Board your ship and sail back to Altair.

ALTAIR

Speak to the person standing at the entrance to learn that Hilda and Gordon have set up a camp outside of town. Rest up and restock in Altair then travel northeast on foot towards Gatrea. Cross the bridge on the left and enter the camp.

CAMP

Locate Gordon and Hilda. Talk to each about infiltrating Fynn then exit the camp. Travel north across the river to get to Fynn. Enter the castle instead of the town.

CASTLE FYNN

Move forward to find Leila. After she rejoins the party, head north, all the way up to the throne room. Heal everyone before talking to the commander, seated inside.

BOSS >> Gottos

Gottos is not all that fast but can punch for 500+ damage so watch out. Just use your best moves/spells and heal frequently. After defeating the boss, Hilda and Gordon seize control of the castle.

Speak to Hilda to learn that Mindu has not been heard from since leaving for Mysidia. Memorize “Mysidia” then ask about it. Memorize “Mask” then ask about it to find out that the White Mask is hidden in the castle depths (if you visited the Tropical Island earlier, you already possess the Black Mask). Memorize the password, “Ekmet Teloez”. Next, ask Gordon about Mysidia. Memorize “Ultima Scroll” then ask about it to learn that the scroll is hidden in the castle as well.

After finishing up with the duo, collect all of the treasures located in Castle Fynn. Exit the Great Hall via the southern stairs and go down to 2F. Once there, head east and open the chest to get a POTION. Fight a group of undead creatures to earn it. Afterwards, press against the eastern wall to reveal a secret passageway. Collect a TITAN’S GLOVE from the chest there then go back through the wall.

Head east to a find a chest opposite from where you found the Potion. Defeat 3 Sergeants and a Sorcerer to earn the AURA SCROLL contained inside. Now go to the southwest corner and press against the western wall to get to the adjoining hallway. Open the chest on top to receive a WEREBANE. Go back through the wall and take the stairs down to 1F.

From 1F, use the stairs in the southwest corner to get up to 3F. Follow the eastern path over to a door. Enter and collect a DOOM SCROLL, BREAK SCROLL, and TOAD SCROLL from the 3 chests inside. Now backtrack to the 1st floor. Once there, go to the northwest corner and collect 1,000 GIL from a chest. To the east, locate two more chests containing 2,000 GIL and 1,000 GIL. After collecting all of the loot, exit the castle and go into town.

FYNN

Life is back to normal in Fynn so check out the shops and rest at the inn if you like. When ready, enter the house in the southwest corner and talk to Pavel. Ask him about Ekmet Teloez and he’ll tell you where the secret entrance is. Save your game outside before returning to Castle Fynn.

CASTLE FYNN

Go up to the Grand Hall on 4F. Once there, examine the wall in the northeast corner. When prompted, offer the password to reveal a secret door. Pass through and descend the stairs until you get to the 1st floor.

Before talking the next set of stairs down to the basement, press against the eastern wall to get onto the grass. Head south along the edge of the castle until you see a hallway, just before reaching the corner. Press against the western wall to get inside. Enter the room on the left to acquire a GOLD SHIELD, GOLD PLATE, and GOLDEN MAIL from the chests inside. Backtrack north to return to the stairwell. Descend to B1.

Go south then veer east to find a chest containing a KNIFE. Backtrack towards the stairs and go up to the northwest corner to get EYE DROPS from the chest there. Now, head east past the first intersection. Take the second southern path down to a chest containing a SHIRT. Afterwards, make your way over to the northeast corner and take the stairs down to B2.

Head east to a chest containing a POTION then go all the way west to find another chest with a POTION. From here, go up to the northwest corner to find a chest containing a MAIDEN’S KISS. Use the stairs in the northeast corner to get to B3. Once there, look in the southwest corner for a chest containing a FLAME SHIELD. In the southeast corner, there’s a chest with a POTION and in the northwest corner, one with a SILK WEB. Head south from this chest to find a staircase. Descend to B4.

Move forward to an intersection. Take the eastern route over to a chest containing the BLOOD SWORD. Defeat some undead creatures to earn it. Never sell this sword. You’ll need it at the end of the game. For now, backtrack to the intersection then head northeast. Open the chest in the corner to obtain FLAME MAIL. The chest in the southeast corner contains a BACKSTABBER. From this chest, go south and take the stairs down to B5.

Once on B5, head east to the end of the canal then go north to a chest. Defeat Rhyos to earn the Orichaldagger contained inside. Afterwards, continue north along the canals to a series of doors. Enter the second door on the right (northeast corner). Open the chest up ahead to obtain the WHITE MASK then continue north to a warp tile. Use it to get back outside.

Save your game before re-entering the castle. When ready, go up to the Great Hall and talk to Hilda. After conversing, rest up and prep in town for the journey to Mysidia. Leave Fynn and return to your ship. Consult your map to see that Mysidia is southwest of Altair. Dock your ship on the western shore. Head east on foot towards the village at the edge of the forest near the mountains.

MYSIDIA

Talk to the local mages and visit the shops, which sell good merchandise and almost every type of spell. Enter the building in the lower left corner and read all of the books on the shelves. Ask about the Masks while there. In the center of town, enter the underground altar room via the stairs to the south. Move forward and place the White Mask on the Goddess statue. After doing so, leave Mysidia and return to your ship.

If you visited the Tropical Island earlier and obtained the Black Mask, sail to the eastern side of this continent. If you don’t have the Black Mask yet, sail to the tiny island in the middle of the southern ocean to retrieve it. Once you have the key item, head over to the yellow icon on your map, which is south of Mysidia. Since the cave is surrounded by mountains, you’ll want to dock on the eastern side near the forest. After disembarking, head west in between the mountain ranges then veer south to reach the cave. Save your game before entering, as the fiends inside are pretty tough.

MYSIDIAN CAVE

Starting on B1, head west and ascend the small set of stairs. Continue west to the end of the path then veer south to a chest containing a GOLD HAIRPIN. Backtrack towards the entrance and follow the southern path until you can travel east. Open the chest below to get a NINJA SUIT. Now head south down the path on the left. At the bottom, you’ll see a doppelganger of Firion standing to the west. Go over to him and use the Black Mask. After he vanishes, enter the door he was standing next to. Take the stairs down to B2.

Head north then veer east until you spot 2 chests. Examine the eastern wall to find a secret passageway leading to the chest on the right. It contains a FLAME LANCE. Go back through the wall and head north to reach the second chest containing a POWER STAFF. After receiving the item, make your way over to the southwest corner. Enter the door there and take the stairs down to B3.

On B3, head over to the northwest corner. Look for a secret entrance on the western wall leading to a chest with an ICE BOW. Return to the main hallway and navigate to the southeast corner, where there’s a chest containing an OGRE KILLER. Defeat some Bombs to earn the item. From here, move west along the lower pathway. Ignore the first door you see and enter the second one on top. Take the stairs down to B4.

Move through the water until you reach some steps. Head north to reach a chest in the northeast corner than contains a POTION. Now go west through the water until you get to a set of doors. Enter the middle door to find 3 chests containing a MUTE BELL, PHOENIX DOWN, and GOLD NEEDLE. Exit the room and head southeast through the water until you find another door. Enter and descend to B5.

Open the chest on the right to receive a DRAIN SCROLL, but you’ll have to defeat some Ghosts to earn it. Afterwards, travel south then veer east. Head north towards the visible chest and press against the eastern wall near the grass to get inside the secret area. Grab a MINI SCROLL from the chest then head north through the water to find 4 more chests. They all contain POTIONS. Backtrack through the water and use the secret passageway to return to the main hallway.

Once there, head north along the leftmost path to get to the door in the northwest corner. Enter and collect a DRAIN SCROLL, OSMOSE SCROLL, and CRYSTAL ROD from the chests inside. Use the Rod to warp out of the cave or trek back on foot.

Board the ship and sail towards the ring marked on your map, which is south of Altair. Remove all of Leila’s gear before going inside the ring. As soon as you do, the ship gets sucked inside a whirlpool.

LEVIATHAN

When you regain control, the party realizes that Leila is missing and that they’re inside a giant sea creature. The green liquid on the ground is actually gastric juice that depletes HP every time it is stepped on, so avoid it as much as possible. Start by following the intestinal tract around to a chest containing a HEADBAND then continue forward to a chest with a POWER SASH. Keep going until you reach an opening in the flesh to the north. Enter the ‘Stomach’.

Head north to find others stuck here. Open a chest in the left cavity to acquire a POWER ARMLET then head south towards the person blocking the path. Show him the Crystal Rod. After Gareth, a dragoon swordsman, joins the party, equip him with better stuff then head west. Veer north to find another skin opening. Go through the hole on top to get inside the ‘Mouth’.

Cross over some ‘saliva’ to the west then head north to reach a chest containing a TERRA SWORD. After equipping it, go south through the liquid to find a chest with a DIAMOND SHIELD. Defeat some Shriekers to earn it. Head west from here. Heal the party before talking to the giant worm guarding the ship.

BOSS >> Barrel Worm

The boss’s punches connect for 100-400 damage so heal often and revive any fallen comrades when necessary. After pummeling the big worm, board the ship to automatically return to the world map.

If you need to make a pit stop in town, now is the time to do it, as the next area is fairly complex. When ready, sail north to the tower.

MYSIDIAN TOWER

Use the Crystal Rod on the tower to gain entrance. Once inside, head west then veer north. Open a chest in the northwest corner to acquire a STAFF. Follow the eastern path to the opposite corner to acquire a second STAFF from the chest there. Hug the eastern wall to access the chest in the secret area. It contains a WHITE ROBE. After equipping it, return to the main hallway and go to the southeast corner, where you’ll find a chest containing yet another STAFF. Head west from here and take the stairs up to 2F.

Make your way over to the northeast corner to find 2 chests that contain a FLAME BOW and FLAME LANCE. Next, navigate to the northwestern corner to find a chest holding a FLAME SHIELD. Backtrack south then head east along the bottom corridor until you get to a staircase. Ascend to 3F.

The lava here will hurt you so be swift and efficient with your movements. Start by heading west to the end of the lava trail. Enter the door at the very end. Head east through some more lava, past the platform with a staircase, until you get to a chest containing a FLAME SWORD. Backtrack to the staircase and take it up to a door. Before entering, move east and west across the lava trails to reach the upper chests. They contain a FLAME HELMET and FLAME MAIL. After equipping the new gear, go back to the door and enter. Heal the party before approaching the mage in the room.

BOSS >> Fire Gigas

The boss is slow but strong. Just use physical attacks and ice magic to take it down. After the battle, take the stairs up to 4F. Head west to reach a chest with an ICE SHIELD then go south. Take the next set of stairs up to 5F.

Once there, head south over some icy spikes. Like the lava beforehand, be mindful of your HP while crossing over. Open the chest to obtain an ICE LANCE then backtrack north to the stairs. Return to 4F and head south to a chest containing ICE GLOVES. Travel east from here. Go north when you can then veer west to reach a chest holding ICE GLOVES. Head east now, then travel northwest to get to a chest containing ICE MAIL. From here, go northeast and take the stairs back up to 5F.

Move across the icy spikes until you reach a chest containing an ICE BRAND. Head north up the steps and enter the door on top. As usual, heal your party before engaging the next boss.

BOSS >> Ice Gigas

Pound on the boss with fire spells and physical might. Upon its defeat, take the stairs up to 6F. Head east to a chest containing a POTION then backtrack to the staircase and go south. Veer east when you can, moving past the first crossroad. Head south down the second one. At the bottom, go west then veer north. Grab a SPELLBINDER from the chest on top then go around to the door on the left. Enter and ascend to 7F.

Head east to a chest containing a SILK WEB then move to the northeast corner to get a HERMES from the chest there. Travel west from here to find a chest containing a UNICORN’S HORN. When ready, enter the door in the northwest corner to face your next boss.

BOSS >> Thunder Gigas

This gigas is much tougher to defeat than the previous two. It uses Boulders and Bolt spells to pummel the party. Try to Muddle the boss, hasten your own party with Hermes, and Shell your weakest characters to reduce magic damage. After defeating the boss, use the stairs up ahead to get to 8F. Head north as far as you can then go east. Enter the door at the end of the path and take the stairs up to 9F.

On 9F, go north across the water to a chest containing an HOURGLASS. Swim west to a chest with a CROSS. From here, go north then veer west onto a platform. Head north then go east over the water. Open the chest in the corner to get a BLACK ROBE, but you’ll have to defeat a powerful White Dragon first. Afterwards, go down to the 4 doors southeast of here. Enter the second door on the left and go upstairs to 10F.

Move forward and speak to Mindu to trigger a scene. When it ends, enter the door to the north. Inside, you’ll see 5 orbs. Do not examine the yellow one in the center yet. Inspect the others first to increase the Strength, Spirit, Intelligence, and Agility of certain party members. After checking all of the white orbs, examine the yellow one to receive the ULTIMA SCROLL. Use the tile that appear to warp outside.

Sail north back to Fynn. After docking, you’ll notice that enemies in the region have changed and become more powerful. They drop some great stuff, too. This is true throughout the world now. The emperor has destroyed certain towns as well – Mysidia, Fynn, Salamand, and Bafsk are the only four left standing.

FYNN

Speak to the locals to learn about the town’s devastation and that the emperor is inside the cyclone outside of Fynn. When ready, enter the castle and go up to the Great Hall. Talk to Hilda and memorize “Cyclone”. Ask her about the Wind Drake afterwards and she’ll explain how the Pendant can be used on the castle’s mirror to call forth the creature. To find the mirror, go down to the 1st floor.

Once there, go over to the southwest corner and take the stairs up to 3F. Head north and enter the room on top. Use the Pendant on the mirror up ahead and watch the Wind Drake’s rebirth. Afterwards, exit the castle and go into town.

Visit Pavel in his house. Mention “Cyclone” and he’ll tell you to search the wall next to his bed. Enter his bedroom and walk through the eastern wall to reach his secret stash. The chests inside contain a RUBY PLATE, NINJA SUIT, THIEF’S GLOVES, GOLD PLATE, GOLD HAIRPIN, ELIXIR, SILVER PLATE, and BLOOD SWORD. Keep the second Blood Sword until the end of the game and sell off all other items you don’t need.

Visit the shops and rest in town before leaving Fynn. When ready, approach the cyclone to the north and watch as the Wind Drake flies you inside.

CYCLONE

From where you emerge, head east and go upstairs to 2F. Open the chest on the left to acquire a RIPPER then head south and ascend the stairs at the end. On 3F, cross the electric floor to the south to reach a chest containing a VENOM AXE. Afterwards, backtrack to the 1st floor.

Once there, head west. Go upstairs to 2F. Follow the path up to 3F. Go west and use the stairs in the upper corner to get to 4F. Head north then veer west to find a chest containing DIAMOND GLOVES. To the east, you’ll find another chest containing a DIAMOND HELM. After collecting the items, go back downstairs to 3F and head south. Use the stairs in the southwest corner to return to 4F.

Head east until you reach two staircases. Use the stairs on the left to get to 5F. Follow the path around to the southeast corner, where you’ll find a chest containing a DEFENDER. Equip it if you wish then move to the southwest corner. Defeat some Generals to earn DIAMOND MAILS there. Now, go back downstairs and use the stairway on the right to get to the other side of 5F.

Move forward to a staircase. Ascend to 6F. Head east then go north to a chest containing the ZEPHYR’S FLUTE. Defeat a Green Dragon to earn the item. Afterwards, take the stairs on the left up to 7F. Heal your party before heading north. As you approach the emperor, a scene unfolds during which he summons two waves of Royal Guards to fight you. After defeating them, the emperor takes you on himself.

BOSS >> Emperor

Kill his cronies with area spells before they have a chance to seriously harm you. Once they are gone, the emperor is a piece of cake. Shield any weak party members, hasten all, and use Ultima spells to end the battle quickly. Watch the scene that follows, ending back in Castle Fynn.

CASTLE FYNN

The royal celebration is interrupted with some curious news about Leon. When you regain control, talk to Hilda. Memorize “Palamecia” then ask her about it. Ask Leila about Palamecia and she’ll suggest consulting Pavel. Go into town and visit him.

Inside Pavel’s house, you’ll find Cid. Talk to him and watch the scene that follows. Afterwards, ask Pavel about Palamecia. He suggests using Cid’s airship to reach it. When ready, leave Fynn and sail to Poft to pick up the airship you just inherited.

Now that you have an airship, you can freely explore any area on the world map. Spend some time doing so if you like. When you are ready to advance the game, fly to the Coliseum. Look for a large castle tucked away inside the mountains next to it. Land your airship on the roof to access Palamecia.

CASTLE PALAMECIA

Starting on 7F, head north and enter the door at the end. Step on the hole in the ground up ahead to drop down to the 1st floor. Once there, head south to find a chest containing DIAMOND PLATE. Backtrack north then follow the eastern path past the first crossroad to a second one. Go south then veer west. Take the stairs to 2F. Move forward to a chest with an HOURGLASS then go back down to the 1st floor.

Back on 1F, go south then west, past the intersection, to a chest containing GARLIC. After getting the item, return to the intersection and head north. Take the stairs up to 2F. Head east then go south to find a chest containing a KNIFE. Head north now to another chest containing a BUCLER then travel west. Follow the path down and around to a set of stairs. Ascend to 3F.

Head north through the pillar room. At the very top, take the western around to a chest containing a THUNDER SPEAR. Defeat a Fallen Emperor to earn it. Backtrack north then take the eastern path around to a staircase. Use it to get to 4F.

Go north then south. Open the chest below to acquire a SAINT’S SPIRIT. Backtrack north then go west to find the next chest. It contains a SLUMBER STALK. Now head east then travel north. At the top of the room, head west. Go all the way around to a door. Enter to find 3 chests containing a HEALING STAFF, MAGE’S STAFF, and SPELLBINDER. Exit the room and backtrack north. Follow the eastern path now. Use the stairs at the end to get to 5F. Head west to another staircase. Ascend to 6F.

On 6F, go down to a chest containing the SUNBLADE. Fight off Coeurls and a Lamia to earn the item. From here, head east and ascend the stairs at the end to get to 7F. Head west then south. Veer west again when you can and enter the door on the left. Grab ELIXIRS from each of the 3 chests inside. Now backtrack to the 5th floor.

Once there, head east then go south. Follow the path around to a set of stairs in the upper right corner. Ascend to 6F. Move through to a staircase in the southeast corner. Go up to 7F. Head north to yet another staircase. Ascend to 8F then go south. Head west when you can, past the red carpet, to the southwest corner. Head north to find 2 chests containing a ZEPHYR’S FLUTE and HELLFIRE then backtrack to the red carpet. Remove all of Gareth’s gear before continuing north. Speak to Leon to trigger a dramatic scene. When it ends, the party will be back in Fynn.

FYNN

Leon joins the party as a permanent member now. He is proficient with all weapons but swords and axes are his specialty. Equip him with your best stuff and sell off the rest in town. When ready, go to the castle and speak with Hilda on 4F. Memorize “Jade Passage” then ask her about it to learn that it’s near Mysidia. Leila and Gordon will offer additional information on how to get there. Leave Fynn afterwards.

Make a point to buy some high-level spells for Leon, who is very good with magic once you train him. The area around Fynn provides excellent training. When ready, board the airship and fly towards Mysidia. Once there, head east and look for a small pond near the edge of the continent (where the gap in the sea is). Park your airship next to the pond. Save your game before stepping inside the pond.

JADE PASSAGE

From the entrance, head south to reach B1. Once there, swim east. When you reach the end, go south to a chest containing a DIAMOND MACE. Now backtrack west. Ignore the center path. Instead, take the next path south to a chest with a HELLFIRE item. Head east from here and enter the door in the southeast corner. Descend to B2.

On B2, look for a chest in the northwest corner containing another HELLFIRE. From here, head east across the water. Grab a NOTUS from the chest up ahead then swim south to a chest containing CAT CLAWS. Fight a Blue Dragon in order to earn it. Now swim east then go north to a door. Enter and take the stairs down to B3.

Wind your way over to the waterfall area. Head east across the water, noting that every step reduces your HP by 1. On the other side, go north up the steps then make your way down to a chest containing a RUNE AXE. Defeat a Behemoth King to acquire it. After equipping the new weapon, head west across the waterfall. Go down into the water again and head east, moving behind the waterfall to find a secret magic shop. Buy what you need (Haste, for example) then continue east along the bottom of the waterfall until you reach a set of doors. Enter the door on the far right and go down to B4.

On B4, head north to find a chest containing a BACKSTABBER then continue north to a door. Enter and collect an AEGIS SHIELD, HOLY LANCE, and DRAGON MAIL from the chests inside. Leave the room and head east. Open a chest in the upper corner to acquire YOICHI’S BOW. Slay a Red Dragon to earn it. Head south from here and enter the door at the bottom. Take the stairs down to B5.

Follow the path up to a chest with a HI-POTION then continue along the path to another chest containing a PROTECT RING. Ignore the door next to this chest. Instead, move forward to a third chest holding another HI-POTION. Keep going until you reach a door. Enter and take the stairs down to B6. Follow the path all the way around to a warp tile. Step on it to enter the final dungeon in the game.

PANDAEMONIUM

Note that you can warp out of this area at any time to restock supplies, rest, etc. If you kept the Blood Swords, now is the time to equip them. When ready, head south then go east, ignoring the doorways. Climb up the stairs at the end then head west. Veer south when you can and make your way over to another set of stairs. Ascend to 2F.

On 2F, head south. Use the steps on the left to get to a chest containing ETHER. Continue weaving through the paths until you reach the northwest corner, where you will find a warp tile. Use it to reach the next area.

Now on 3F, go south to a chest containing EYE DROPS. Backtrack west then head north. When you reach the top, go east then move south to another warp tile. Use it to get to 4F. Once there, head west, passing through the leftmost arch. Enter the door up ahead then continue west. Navigate through the archways until you reach a chest in the northwest corner. Fight a Zombie Borghen to earn the GENJI GLOVES inside then make your way over to the northeast corner. Push against the eastern wall to enter a secret room with a chest. Open it to receive the MASAMUNE, the strongest sword in the game. Equip it on your sword expert then exit the secret room.

Go back down to the southwest door leading to all of the archways. Once inside, enter the 2nd door to the west and follow the path up to a chest. Defeat Tiamat to earn the GENJI HELMET contained inside then backtrack south to the archway area. Once there, enter the door on the far right. Now on 6F, follow the paths over to a chest. Defeat Beelzebub to earn the GENJI ARMOR inside. Backtrack to the archway room once more.

Now enter the 2nd door to the east. Back on 6F, follow the path up to a chest containing a RIBBON. Defeat Astaroth to acquire it. Afterwards, head west. Move through to the southwest corner where you’ll find a warp tile. Use it to return to 4F. Once there, move forward to another warp tile. Use this one to warp to 7F.

On 7F, head west then veer north to reach a chest containing SAGE’S WISDOM. Continue heading west, moving clockwise around the area until you find the next warp tile. Use it to get to 8F. Move forward then follow the path on the far left north. Open the chest on top to acquire an ACID BOTTLE. Head east from here, past the warp tile, until you can travel south. Grab a HELLFIRE from the chest in the corner. This is the last chest you’ll find in the game, so if you are low on supplies, now would be the time to warp out and restock.

When you are ready to continue, backtrack north to the warp tile you passed earlier. Use it to get to 9F. Once there, head over to the southeast corner and warp to 10F. Heal your party and fill everyone’s item slots with Phoenix Downs, Elixirs, etc. To be extra safe, Memo Save your game before heading north to face the final boss.

FINAL BOSS >> Emperor

The emperor will Dispel any enhancements you’ve put on your party so don’t waste time casting Shield, Shell, or Wall. His Starfall Magic attack will hurt all for 200+, so revive anyone that cannot sustain the damage. With Blood Swords equipped, the Emperor will fall in 2 or 3 hits.

After defeating the final boss, watch the closing scenes. Save your game after the end credits so that you can replay in Normal mode.
